AbstractMany illustrations and short essays on various topics pertaining to German Americans, their history and culture. The survey ranges from groups of early sectarian settlers whose descendants today still cultivate the customs and language of the old homeland, to individualistic families who started life all over again in their adopted country and became totally assimilated within a single generation. The reader encounters celebrated names in the worlds of art, science, business and politics, as well as forgotten men and women among the millions of average citizens, without whom the United States could not have achieved the position it holds today. The authors examine the reciprocal cultural interchange sparked on both sides of the Atlantic by the great migration, and cast an eye at curiosities such as Santa Claus, who emigrated right from the Rhenish Palatinate to the chimney of every American home.
