AbstractThe decision for American independence and the drafting of the first state constitutions and of the United States Constitution were accompanied by intense public debate which could be followed in German. During this process, the German press capably and nobly informed its readers and steered them through the straits of special rights for minorities, so that the German Americans did not become an isolated apolitical subgroup but a genuine American constituency enjoying equal rights with all citizens.
