AbstractRothensteiner, John, born 1860 in St. Louis, died 1936 in St. Louis. Son of emigrants from Tyrol and Westphalia. Attended St. Peter and Paul and other parochial schools in St. Louis. Studied theology, philosophy, and classical languages at St. Francis Seminary in Wisconsin (1873 on). Ordained a Catholic priest in 1884 after living 4 years in Tyrol. Served St. Michael's parish in Frederickstown, Missouri (1887-1907) and Holy Ghost Church in St. Louis (1907 on). Travelled extensively in Europe in 1898. An enthusiastic supporter of German-American culture, he donated his extensive library to the Auslands-Institut in Stuttgart. Translated German works into English, and wrote German poems and articles for various periodicals, including Der deutsche Vorkaempfer and Die Glocke.
