AbstractA biography of the conservative German-American Catholic, Arthur Preuss (1871-1934). He was the editor of Fortnightly Review, and played an important role in the Americanist crisis. While he is mainly known for his participation in the controversy surrounding Americanism, he had an influence on the history of the Catholic Church in America. This work chronicles his life, examining how he was formed by the events of his day and, in turn, how he attempted to shape them. Approximately 5,000 pieces of Preuss's professional and private correspondence are studied, and then compared and contrasted with other sources to provide a sketch of the German and conservative Catholic perspective on the controverted issues of the day.
