AbstractNicolay was born in Essingen; at the age of six he emigrated with his family to America, settling in Cincinnati. He became the editor, publisher, and owner of the Pike County Free Press in Pittsfield, Illinois. He was active in the newly formed Republican party, and worked as assistant to the secretary for the state of Illinois, coming frequently into contact with Abraham Lincoln. In 1861, Lincoln appointed Nicolay as his private secretary, the first official act of Lincoln's new administration.
