AbstractFounded in Pennsylvania at the turn of the century, the Deutsch-Amerikanischer National-Bund, The National German-American Alliance, was an ethnic federation active in St. Louis and in other Missouri communities from 1904 until April 1918. During this time, the St. Louis German-American community was engaged in what many German-Americans perceived as a life or death struggle in the political arena with those forces in the state favoring prohibition. The historical and political background of the Alliance in St. Louis prior and at the beginning of the war is examined in this book
