AbstractThe object of this essay is to explore the German mind and spirit in order to explain the Pennsylvania German house. We will be dealing with attitudes; it should always be kept in mind that building materials was itself a language in folk architecture. The Pennsylvania German house was a symbol. Stone houses for instance projected a conscious achievement of status. In its evolution, the Pennsylvania German house, with its three- or four-room arrangement, rapidly developed a character of its own and found its greatest expression in Pennsylvania.
