AbstractJohn A. (Johann Andreas) Wagener was one of the relatively few German-born men who fought and held high rank in the American Civil War on the Confederate side. He was born in 1816 in the village of Sievern, near Bremerhaven, in the kingdom of Hanover. In 1831 he emigrated to America, and by 1833 had moved to Charleston, South Carolina, becoming a leader among the German immigrants in this city. During the Civil War he served with distinction in the Confederate army and rose to the rank of brigadier general. He died in 1876.
