AbstractHans Guido Freiherr von Buelow was one of the most versatile and fascinating musical personalitites in the nineteenth century, and possibly one of the best orchestra conductors of all times. He served as Hofmusikdirektor to the Duke of Meiningen in the 1880s and was also a passionate intellectual who wrote many essays on various topics, frequently as an advocate of new music. His international fame derived from his qualifications as a pianist. For the 1875-76 season, he received a contract for a tour of the United States. His trip, which lasted from October to June and reached most major communities encompassed by the triangle Boston-New Orleans-Chicago, is the central topic of this paper.
