AbstractThe conclusions to be drawn from this treatise suggest a rearrangement of the first century of German American history: 1. Sporadic appearance of Germans in the North American colonies, beginning with 1608. 2. Continuity in German immigration, regular arrivals in New Netherland and distribution among the neighboring colonies, intercolonial relations, first attempt at organization, 1637-1664. 3. Beginning of sectarian immigration and founding of a distinct German settlement in Germantown, Pennsylvania, 1683. 4. The great tide of German immigration, setting in with the exodus of the "Palatines," in 1709.
