AbstractBeginning in the 1890's, a wave of national unity in both the US and Brazil attempted to discourage the tendency for immigrant groups to remain separate and diverse. Thinking in stereotypes was encouraged and tolerance and understanding diminished: a comparison of American and Brazilian treatment of German immigrants.
