AbstractThis investigation into the life and historical context of the emigration from Baden and involvement in the American Civil War of one common soldier in the revolutionary citizens' militia of Baden in 1848-49 is dedicated to the memory of all such men and women who were only able to realize their dreams of freedom and democracy in their adopted homeland of America and in their own small way contributed to the cultural and social fabric of American society. In examining the fragmentary information of one such individual's life, we are also able to see how the experience of participation in the fight to preserve the Union enabled thousands of such German immigrants to become fully integrated into American society. It also sheds light on the amazing phenomenon of the rapid assimilation of these Germans in the pre-World War I era.
