AbstractThis essay examines the convergence of interests contained within the bracketing of American Germanistik and German Classicism in terms of nineteenth century cultural exchange. The formative German element in nineteenth century America is examined for its role in laying the groundwork for the study of German language and literature at colleges and universities.
