| Abstract | Ferdinand Freiligrath (1810-1876), the German poet, is considered in his relationship to America. He is well known for introducing American poets to German readers through his translations, including Bret Harte, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Bayard Taylor and Walt Whitman. A larger connection for Freiligrath to America came about through his political stance before and during the 1848 revolution. He kept in touch with the "Forty-Eighters" who settled in the United States following the unsuccessful uprising in Germany. His poetry continued to be popular among them in their new country. This essay examines many letters written by Freiligrath and how they illuminate his position in the 1840s. |
