AbstractThe author discusses general factors and developments of language maintenance and retention struggles on a national level and then looks at similar processes in North Carolina on regional and local "micro" levels. He also explores some of the conditions of German language maintenance in comparion with other non-English immigrant languages, such as Spanish, French, Italian, Polish, and Dutch.
