AbstractA paper delivered to the Wachovia Historical Society of Salem, North Carolina in 1898.The inception of Bethania was due to a desire to begin a place where a measure of emancipation from the strict Choir distinctions of Bethabara was possible. A large number of refugees had come to the Bethabara Fort for protection. To accommodate them, as well as others of the older settlers who preferred their own business arrangements to the General Economy, the new settlement of Bethania was resolved upon, though it caused some bitterness and even led to a jeremiad over the beginning of the downfall of Moravian exclusiveness. The site of the settlement was selected June 12, 1759.
