AbstractDuring his lifetime, Carl Schurz managed to fuse the identities of his heritage and his new environment. he had become a good American while yet retaining his affection for his German roots, a solution which served as an example to his countrymen, whose loyalty to the Union he was able to strengthen. His answer to the age-old question facing immigrants was a viable one, and it is as valid today as it was in the 1860s.
