AbstractGerman socialists providing opportunities for alternatives to mainstream American cultural expression staged the radical Arbeiter-Juli-Feier on July 3, 1876 in Chicago, to commemorate the centennial, which was to them not a republic, nor a fatherland. The German socialists expressed disillusionment with the US political and economic systems and attempted to provoke reflection on US history and the commemoration of its heritage.
