AbstractThis article compares the image of Canada found in select works by Walter Bauer and Henry Beissel. Personal experiences as well as influences by modern writers and painters combine to shape Bauer's image of Canada essentially into a myth of hope and longing, akin to the archetypal search for the promised land. Although Beissel consciously avoids certain conventional literary views to Canada, his central image of ever recurring natural cycles is also a mythopoeic one.
