AbstractThe author compares the language behavior of sectarian and non-sectarian Pennsylvania German speakers and comes to the conclusion that while sectarians maintain a stable bilingual situation which is supported by diglossia, the non-sectarians shift to English. This shift has also an effect on the English of the Pennsylvania Germans.
