AbstractAn examination of the extent to which editors of the German-American press in St. Louis kept their readers informed of German literature. Disregarding the strictly ephemeral writers, this investigation records not only the works of famous German poets and novelists found in the German-American newspapers of St. Louis, but also the works of those celebrities of the day. The type of information furnished on German literary figures and movements is also characterized. With one exception (the St. Charles Demokrat, a weekly), the study is limited to German-language dailies published in St. Louis. The panorama of German literature produced by the combined efforts of the newspapers is presented chronologically, as can be seen in the following chapter titles: The Preclassical Period; Goethe; Schiller; The Age of Romanticism; The Revolutionary Age (1830-1848); The Age of Realism I; The Age of Realism II; The Age of Naturalism.
