AbstractShorttitle catalogue and ISBN list of the microfiche edition of works by and about the forty-eighters (53 titles). The failed revolutions of 1848/1849 significantly shaped not only German but also American history. A few thousand radicals fled Europe for the US, where they built a range of social institutions from the Free Thinkers to the Turners. Some of these immigrants played important roles in the abolition movement and the early women's movement. In addition to their many literary works, they helped create a large progressive German-language press. Many served in the Civil War and some became noted Union military leaders. Our collection reflects the breadth and depth of the 48ers' impact on 19th century America. The microfiche edition includes works by and about Carl Schurz, Karl Heinzen, Gustav Koerner, Friedrich Kapp, Heinrich Rattermann, Mathilde F. Anneke and many others, as well as hard to find works on the general history of German immigrants in 19th century America. Nearly 20% of the works are written in English, the others are in German language.
