AbstractThe first German language newspaper in American was established by Benjamin Franklin, the Philadelphische Zeitung, in 1732. It was short-lived, and the German-American press most often traces its origin to Christopher Sauer's establishment in 1739 of the Hoch-Deutsch Pennsylvanische Geschict-Schreiber in Germantown. This study examines the development and growth of the Pennsylvania German-American press, especially in light of the American Revolution and their political standings.
