AbstractTolzmann's article provides a brief discussion of the first German settlers' emigration to Pennsylvania and their founding of Germantown. It also describes the 1883 bicentennial celebration of German emigration, which took place in Philadelphia and was organized by Seidensticker and which developed into the super-regional traditional "German Day" and was accompanied by the growth of German-American societies.
