AbstractMielke's article discusses the portrayal of slaves in 18th century German and German-American poetry. It organizes the arguments against slavery of the authors Gellert, Wieland, Lichtwers, Schubart, Claudius, Pfeffel into the following categories: rational, aesthetic, moral, emotional, and historico-political (not necessarily in that order) Included are poems by Pastorius ("Gegen die Negersklaverei") and Pfeffel ("Lied eines Negersklaven im Beginn des amerikanischen Krieges" a.o.). It also discusses the German practice of selling men into service as soldiers and compares the two types of slavery.
