AbstractNewtowne's article discusses the conflict between the German settlers of New Ulm and the American Indians who lived on the land. It focusses on the Germans' use of frontier mythology to justify settling the land. It describes Cooper's use of the myth of the "Noble Savage" as well as the process of mythicizing American Indians as noble or ignoble savages.
