Abstract19th C. German immigrants hoping to achieve economic stability, did not maintain political contacts with Germany (except 48ers and socialists, who were political refugees). Relations between the German Empire and the American Republic were relatively neutral before 1914. WWI brought, however, a change of American heart, as differences between Kaiser Wilhelm II's and Woodrow Wilson's leadership became known. Three major interests divided the two leaders: German submarine warfare, Wilson's peace mediation, and Germany's attempt to influence conditions within the US through propaganda campaigns and sabatoge.
