| Abstract | The author explores Freud's America, the country that Freud constructed, the fantasy that became, for him, a reality. His attitudes toward the U.S. are well known, but they conceal a paradox that has never received the exploration it deserves. It will tell us little about America perhaps, but much about Freud. Freud did not do justice to 19th c. bourgeois sexual life.
