AbstractThe German-American relationship is discussed in a global and European politcal context. Three and a half decades are highlighted. In the 1950's the US wanted to make Germany free with regard to personal freedoms, but not in terms of forming an independant foreign policy. In the 1960's West Germany faced the problem of deciding between its perceived security interests and its desire to construct a European community based on politcal and economic recovery. In the 1970's, as the balance of power changed, the US was sharing its economic prestige with Western Europe and Japan; the Soviet Union was equal in nuclear capabilities; and the US had suffered a decline in influence abroad, all resulting in an apparent shift in German-American affairs and in many cases conflicts of interest.
