AbstractThis essay looks at three centuries of German immigration to the US and the degrees of public acceptance or rejection of the German-Americans. The cliche of the hardworking German, the arrival of revolutionary intellectuals after 1830 and 1848-49, influence of the press, induction of German music and literature into US culture, the devastation caused by WWI and WWII and scholarly organizations for German-American studies all contributed to US public opinion of German-Americans.
