AbstractFor Germany, the major trends in the perception of the US in the 20th c have followed a mirroring pattern (Germany or Europe is what America is not), but they were affected by certain complications. The two world wars and subsequent recovery period have resulted in extreme reactions toward America and Americanism, both pro and con. Although a major study of the long-term developments in Germany does not yet exist, some general thoughts and suggestions are given in this paper, which might be helpful, particularly in light of the perceived new antagonism between Europe and the US
