AbstractSchelbert's essay discusses non-crisis motivations for migration, focussing on the founders of two colonies: Jean Jacques Dufour, who settled Vevay, Indiana in 1803 and Louis Vincent Samuel Tardent, who settled Chabag, Bessarabia (South Russia) in 1823. It also describes the beginnings and early decades of each of the settlements and probes the historical contexts within which they emerged.
