AbstractGuggisberg's article outlines Schaff's initial assumptions about the United States, their transition during the first decade after his arrival in the Americas, the impact of the Civil War on his perceptions, and finally his views of the States after he had reached the pinnacle of his career at the Union Theological Seminary in New York City.
