AbstractA history of the relationship between Bremen-Bremerhaven (on the River Weser) and the United States. The port and town of Bremerhaven were built after 1827, and the first ship to enter the newly finished port was the American ship, the "Draper," in 1830. During the following decades and until present days, the port installations have been considerably expanded and trade has fluctuated. Passenger traffic between Bremerhaven and the U.S. also has played a considerable role, including heavy emigrant traffic. The American military presence in Bremenhaven since 1945 (through the book's publication in 1966) is examined, and a report on some German emigrants to the U.S. who maintain ties with Bremerhaven.
