AbstractThe author has attempted a history of the Forty-eighters with constant reference to the history of the whole German immigration, during the period when the influence of this remarkable group of refugees was at its zenith. He has also been concerned with the transformation of radical revolutionists into conservatives and ardent supporters of Bismarck and the Hohenzollerns, under the spell of the Franco-German War, and the Americanization process.
