AbstractThis paper has been concerned primarily with the first decade of Okarche's history. During this time the community became predominantly German in language and in the character of its people. The language was fostered by thriving religious groups and by a strong economic organization which brought a spirit of cooperation among the German farmers. A more important cohesive influence was the German-American press. Eventually the language was to disappear almost completely.
