AbstractThis is the first critical edition of a literary work (preserved as a manuscript) of an early German-American author. Pastorius (1651-1719), the founder of Germantown (1683), was one of the most learned, witty, and prolific authors of Colonial America. This volume consists of two parts, the 'Deliciae Hortenses' and the 'Voluptates Apianae'. It contains a wealth of lore on gardening and apiculture drawn from Pastorius's own experience as well as from the Bible, classical antiquity, contemporary authors, and popular sayings. An important book for those interested in early American and German-American culture. Written 1711.
