AbstractFrom the introduction: Freidrich Wilhelm Balcke [born in Ulotho, Minden, Westphalia, Prussia], the son of German immigrants to Davenport, Iowa, in 1857, was a professor and president of the Deutsches Kollegium or German College of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa from 1876-1891. He served this German-American Methodist institution longer than any other person and left his impress upon many colleagues and students who became leaders in the denomination. His work, closely related to colleges and personalities of German Methodism, was an attempt to preserve a German cultural-linguistic tradition amid the levelling process of Americanization in the middle west.
