AbstractThis article examines a late nineteenth century Milwaukee publication for children and young people as a reflection of German-American middle-class culture of the time. It shows how the spirit of the 1848 revolution and the experience of the American Civil War shaped German-American intellectuals and how the idealsof freedom and equality dominated their thoughts. It also reflects their dedication to the natural sciences and theiridentification with the Free-Thinker movement.
