AbstractJoseph Weydemeyer was a German-American, a political exile from Germany, a friend of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, and the first Marxist in the United States. He is credited with giving Marxism a solid foundation in the United States. His activity as an organizer and propagandist comprised the first steps in which the labor movement in the United States became acquainted with Marxism. Here are documented Weydemeyer's formative years, his early years in America, the revival of the labor movement, his political realignment, and his activity during the Civil War until his death in 1866.
