AbstractA detailed history of the life and work of Johann Adam Eyer (1755-1837), a Pennsylvania-German schoolmaster and artist. Like many other Pennsylvania German schoolmasters Eyer made Fraktur, the modern name for the illuminated texts once extremely popular among the Pennsylvania Dutch. He is known as one of the greatest Fraktur artists in terms both of his production and of its impact on Fraktur produced after him. The basic character of Fraktur as child-oriented and education-related is amply demonstrated in his works. Includes many photographs of examples of his work, as well as a complete translation of his school roster book, 1779-1787. The original is missing several pages and is fragmented in some parts, but the remaining material gives excellent information about school life among the Pennsylvania Germans. A complete transcript is offered for its genealogical value.
