AbstractThe author examines the split of Cincinnati German Lutherans along ethnographic boundaries. The North Germans had to have their own "plattdeutsche Kirche." Ethno-linguistic separation from the South Germans provided for expression of the faith and unhindered communication in the familiar dialect band of Low German. Mindful of the fact that at the heart of community is communication, the North/South split must be seen as coming from a psychological need for a cultural and social safety net during the difficult process of acculturation.
