AbstractAmericans of German ancestry form the largest European ethnic group in the United States, surpassing the English by almost a million. Many of these German-Americans are in Missouri, having immigrated along with the earliest American settlers. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the settlement of Missouri both by old stock Americans and by Germans, to outline what is known about dialect divisions in the state, and then to analyze linguistic data selected from interviews of Missouri Germans conducted by Adolf Schroeder and by the author in several sections of the state. The purpose of the linguistic study is to see the extent to which Missouri Germans have adapted linguistically to the dominant surrounding language patterns -- not just language shift, but the adaptation of their dialects of English to the general pattern of regional speech in Missouri.
