AbstractThe subject of German housebarns is taken up while focusing on a famous example built by Hannoverians in the Germanic "Rhineland" along the Missouri River on the margin of the Ozarks. The William Pelster housebarn is an intriguing structure housing animals, agricultural activities, the produce and equipment of harvest, and the members of the farm family in spaces inside a single building. It represents the ultimate appearance of a concept familiar in Europe through a thousand years of history. This Missouri housebarn can be seen as a reflection of the creative behavior of its builder, William Pelster. Though other housebarns may have been built in Missouri, no others survive. Before the significance of the Pelster housebarn is examined, a discussion of the evolution and broader subject of housebarns is provided.
