AbstractIn the eyes of conventional wisdom, foreign-language newspapers in the United States are transient phenomena that provide a medium of communication for a group inevitably on its way to dissolving into the American mainstream. This comfortable paradigm does not, however, apply to the German-language newspapers and magazines of St. Louis, at least until the last days. For over a century, Missouri Germans managed to rise above ethnic parochialism and provide a complete -- and distinct -- perception of both American and German realities. More than any other foreign-language tradition in St. Louis, the German press was a central contributor to the intellectual and political scene in St. Louis, and unlike any other, the German press spoke with an authority heard around the world.
