AbstractThe larger American context of ethnic history includes several general terms used by Anglo-Americans for the German emigrants who "invaded" English-speaking areas of the United States over the past three centuries. Of these terms, the three most important are "Palatine," "Hessian," and "Dutchman." Each of these terms is examined in turn and set in its historical and emotional context.
