| Abstract | This compilation lists doctoral dissertations in all disciplines dealing with immigrants and their children in the continental United States since 1789. It excludes therefore titles on the native ethnic groups -- Hawaiians, Eskimos, and American Indians. Titles dealing with Puerto Ricans are likewise omitted. Other omissions include titles on black slaves brought in the 17th and 18th centuries and the Spanish-speaking residents in the Southwest before the United States extended its sovereignty over their territory. However, studies on blacks and Mexicans are included if they emphasize any immigrant connection after 1789. Also the compilation incorporates titles which are not entirely devoted to immigrants and their children as in the case of studies comparing them in some way with ethnic groups and "old stock" Americans who are otherwise excluded. In short, the aim is to list as many significant titles as possible pertaining to immigrants and their children during the past two centuries. Includes index of ethnic and nationality groups. |
