| Abstract | A German named Heinrich von Uchteritz was sold as a slave to work in the sugar plantations of Barbados in the 17th century. An account of his experience explains how he became a captive, was sent to the New World, and finally regained his freedom through the reputation of the Holstein Court. His account is in a small volume first published 1666 in Schleswig. The full title is:Kurtze Reise-Beschreibung Hrn. Heinrich von Uchteritz/ Lieutenants, Erbsassen auf Modelwitz in Meissen/ etc. Worinnen vermeldet/ was Er auf dirselben fuer Unglueck und Glueck gehabt/ sonderlich wie er gefangen nach West-Indien gefueret/ zur Sclaverey verkaufft/ und auf der Insul Barbados Durch des Nahmen seines Hn. Vettern/ Joh. Christoph von Uchteritz/ uff Medewitz und Spansdorff Erbgessen/ Cammer=Junckern zu Gottorff/ wunderlich errettet und erloeset worden. |
