AbstractA paper delivered to the Wachovia Historical Society of Salem, North Carolina in 1901.The use of the lot was a very ancient and widespread custom, which received express sanction in the Old Testament. The Hebrew name for the lot means a little stone and refers to the use of different colored stones which were thrown to obtain a divine decision of the question at issue. This article examines the history and present use of the lot in the Moravian Church. Issues decided upon by lot include appointments to ministry, marriages, and general subjects requiring divine decisions. Each drawing of lots was preceded by prayer.
