AbstractTo begin with, the Pennsylvania Germans simply were not seen by the historian. Or, to be more exact, they were not seen by the majority of professional historians over a long period. Writers who did give them some attention frequently recognized only a few picturesque elements in the story, such as the founding of Ephrata or of Germantown, and missed the major themes. A constant note, with those who established the early Pennsylvania German societies, was one of protest against this neglect in the national literature. More disturbing than neglect were those actual distortions which, originating in popular misunderstanding, found their way at times into both fiction and historical criticism. Neglect, misunderstanding, and distortion themselves have a history, and it is the purpose of this chapter to inquire into their origins and development, rather than to repeat any general historial narrative.
